our mountain breakfast sandwich
Gruezi!
I'm lucky to live only a few miles from this place - but it is worth the trip. Good food, nice hot stove, a neat boutique and provisions - ie -candy, pastries, local cheese, wine and so on..http://www.warrenstore.com/
This is where we discovered the "ruetzler' breakfast sandwich. Here is my version which the kids wolfed down in under a nano second:
Basically, an english muffin toasted with melted ham, cheese, fried egg and tomatoes. I put mayo on the muffins but if I were making it for myself I would spice it up a bit and try some chipotle mayo - I used emmenthal and gruyere and next time I will serve it with the German barrel pickles. It's not open face but it takes a better picture that way..
I am not sure what the history of the sandwich is but I imagine it was introduced to us by someone with the name Ruetzli - which sounds Swiss German to me. It's not that far removed from the kaseschnitte mit ei or croute au fromage a l'oeuf which is also a staple in our household.
